Sacramento's river train ride starts at a different place from the museum galleries
The excursion experience has separate tickets, a passenger-station departure and important boarding-access requirements.

A museum locomotive and a moving train offer different kinds of history. The California State Railroad Museum's Sacramento Southern Railroad excursions add the rhythm of travel and a riverfront perspective, but they require a plan beyond buying museum-gallery admission.
The foundation describes a roughly forty-five-minute, six-mile round trip from Old Sacramento along the Sacramento River. Current dates and operating equipment should be checked through its excursion booking page; the presence of a steam locomotive in the collection does not guarantee a steam-powered departure.
Tickets are purchased or collected at the Central Pacific Passenger Station at Front and J streets. Regular coach prices are listed as $18 for adults and $10 for ages six–seventeen, with younger children free. First-class and special departures have their own terms.
Historic coaches require climbing narrow stairs, and their aisles do not accommodate wheelchairs, mobility devices or strollers. Contact the museum about your group's needs before booking. Confirm the departure time and allow space for station check-in. During the journey, notice how a rail vehicle frames a familiar landscape differently from a road or walking route.
